Why is this important? To understand that, let us first see what is thyroid and how does it work. The thyroid is a small gland, about two inches in size, located in the front of our neck. You may wonder why all this importance to such a tiny gland! It is not because of the size, but the functions this little gland performs.
Yes, you may be surprised to know that it is the thyroid gland that regulates our metabolism, body temperature, heart rate, brain function, other hormonal activities as well as our mood. So much of activity packed into the actions of this small gland. Now imagine, it starts malfunctioning. Yes, now you get the picture and why you need to be careful about the proper functioning of your thyroid gland.
So how does it work? The thyroid gland produces two major hormones in our body – thyroxine (T4) and the triiodothyronine (T3). The T4 gets converted to T3 that is used up by the body for the various functions. There is also a small amount of T4 available in the body.
When the pituitary gland senses that the overall thyroid hormone level is falling in the body, it generates Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) that, as its name suggests, stimulates the growth of thyroid hormone (a combination of T4 and T3, with the majority being T4).
If the thyroid hormones are so important for the functioning of the body, what happens if its level is not appropriate? There are two possibilities
Now that we have seen what impact the deviating levels of thyroid hormone in the body can have, we are in a better position to understand the importance of a timely and accurate thyroid test. The thyroid test is conducted on blood samples collected from the patient and checking for the T4 and TSH levels. The procedure for a thyroid test is similar to any other blood test you may go for.
The attendant will identify the vein near your elbow or wrist, to draw the blood sample from. They will tie a very tight band to slow the blood flow, leading to the vein being swollen. The blood sample is collected with the help of a needle connected to a syringe. Once the required amount of blood is drawn, the band is opened, and pressure is applied to the point from where the blood was drawn. It is then covered with a cotton pad.
The blood sample thus drawn is then analysed for the T4 and TSH levels. The thyroid tests provide a clear indication of the thyroid hormone levels. However, the symptoms of the thyroid deviation can be seen in the patient. These symptoms keep changing with the age and hence cannot be the only thing that can be relied on. It is normal practice to keep checking the T4 and TSH levels in children, since its deviation may cause growth disorders.
