    frequently Asked Questions

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure by which the tooth's surface colour is retained by removal of the dirt and debris, and the colour of the tooth surface is made a few shades whiter by use of dental bleaching agents.

Teeth whitening is a quick, non-invasive, and affordable form of treatment that enhances a smile.

Teeth bleaching can be professionally achieved in the dental office by the use of a special dental bleaching machine or dental laser and dental bleaching agents. Teeth bleaching can also be done using home bleach kits available at the local medical store.

Teeth bleaching gives you an enhanced whiteness and brightness of teeth. But it is not permanent and requires good maintenance and regular touch-ups for a prolonged effect.

Tooth staining happens due to several factors:-

    • Age- As age progresses, there is a definite change in the colour of your teeth. Due to wear and tear, and stain accumulation teeth tend to get darker with age, and it is for the same reason that teeth bleaching in old age are more difficult to achieve and more time-consuming.
    • Eating habits- Consumption of colour imparting foodstuff like coffee, tea, red wine, soft drinks, carrots, beetroot regularly causes staining of teeth over the years.
Consumption of acidic foods like citrus fruits causes enamel erosion because of which the surface of the tooth becomes transparent, and the yellowish tinge of the dentin below can be seen.
    • Smoking- Nicotine leaves a brownish stain which is slowly absorbed by the tooth surface, causing an intrinsic stain.
    • Use of certain drugs and chemicals- Tetracycline drug causes brown or dark grey stains, which are difficult to remove.
Excessive consumption of fluoride leads to fluorosis, which causes white spots on teeth.
    • Trauma- An injury or trauma to the tooth may lead to cracks in the tooth, which tend to be more prone to stain accumulation.
    • Grinding- Grinding of teeth may leave micro-cracks in the teeth, which leads to the darkening of the biting edges.
    • Natural tooth color- The natural tooth color may vary for different people. Generally, yellow-brown tooth color is more responsive to bleaching than a green-grey color.
    • Translucency and thinness of teeth- While some teeth are translucent and thin, others are opaque and thick. The opaque and thick teeth appear lighter in color and are more responsive to bleaching.

Thinner and translucent teeth (more so in cases of front teeth) have less pigment necessary for bleaching.

Transparency of teeth cannot be corrected by any form of teeth whitening procedures.

A thorough dental examination is done by the dentist to check if you are the right candidate for teeth whitening, or if there is an underlying medical or dental problem causing your discoloration, that requires to be treated first rather than opting for teeth whitening.

The sensitivity of teeth or gums and the presence of certain fillings may prevent the use of certain products on your teeth. Your dentist will be the best person to guide you about alternative methods to whiten your teeth.

In people who have crowns and veneers in their mouth certain teeth whitening kits would be unsuitable as the peroxide in the kit does not penetrate the surface. Again, your dentist will guide you about the kinds of products to use for teeth whitening.

    • A clinical examination is first done by the dentist to determine whether you are the right candidate for teeth whitening.
    • On the day of the appointment, the dentist will first place a lip retractor in your mouth, which is a plastic material that keeps the lips away from the teeth so that the teeth can be easy to access.
    • Next, the dentist will cover the gums of the teeth with a gel-like material and harden this material using a light cure. This is known as a gingival barrier and it protects the gums from the dental bleaching agents that are used for teeth whitening.
    • The dentist may also apply a compound to your teeth to prevent tooth sensitivity.
The dentist then applies a whitening gel made of 15% to 35% hydrogen peroxide on the front teeth. Hydrogen peroxide acts by breaking through the outer porous layer of the tooth and breaking apart the stain compounds using a chemical reaction known as oxidation.
    • The application of whitening gel is followed by the application of a high-powered light which hastens the whitening procedure.
    • Most systems recommend the application of multiple coats of gel in the teeth whitening procedure. The dentist will rinse off the gel and apply a fresh coat of gel as many times as the system recommends for a time span of about 40 to 45 minutes.
    • After the completion of the procedure, the teeth usually become four to six shades whiter than the original tooth colour.
    • Some patients may experience tooth or gum sensitivity after the procedure, but it usually goes away in one or two days.
    • The effect of teeth whitening usually lasts for many months or years depending on the diet of the patient and habits like smoking, but the stains will eventually return.
    • Some dentists recommend using a professional home whitening kit to maintain teeth whitening. These kits include custom made trays and tubes of bleaching agents (which are less concentrated than the dental office agents). The patient can line the trays with this gel and wear it in the mouth for a couple of hours or while sleeping.
    • There are also home bleaching kits available at a chemist store, where one can do the procedure at home without the need to visit a dentist. But the results of these kits are slow and not as effective as that done by the dentist.

The cost of teeth whitening in Pune depends on which dentist you go to, the area in which the dental clinic is located, the type of material used and the condition of the teeth. The cost varies in different dental clinics.

On average, the teeth whitening cost in Pune can vary quite significantly as per the clinic and the facilities in the clinic.

Teeth whitening can last for many years depending on the technique and material used. It also depends on how well the oral hygiene is maintained by the patient and whether the dentist goes for regular dental clean-ups.

Diet, age, medications, alcohol, smoking are all known to affect the tooth colour.

The dentist can do touch-ups to your teeth to maintain teeth whitening for a longer time. The teeth whitening treatment in Pune has become hugely popular.
