The most common usage of sonography is in the field of abdominal sonography, where it helps in identifying a number of health issues. However, abdominal sonography is not the only use case for the procedure. It is generally the first line of investigation in many types of problems. Doctors refer the patients to get a sonography done, as the images help them identify the tell-tale signs of many problems. The principal of sonography is simple. Using a small transducer (or probe as it is commonly known as), the doctor sends ultrasound waves to the patient’s body. These sounds are inaudible to the normal human ear. However, once these sound waves collide with the bones and other internal organs, their reflection can help create a faithful diagrammatic representation of these organs by a machine connected to the probe.
Also, the patient does not need to undergo any specific preparation for the examination. Only if you are going for an abdominal ultrasound, you will be expected to drink lots of water. You will be expected to avoid going to the toilet after having water, as this will help your bladder to distend for better clarity. In case you are going to have an ultrasound for gall bladder, your doctor may recommend you to fast from 8 hours earlier.

- Doppler Ultrasound: This is used to check the flow of blood in the veins and arteries and assists the doctors in identifying whether or not there is a clot. This is especially useful if your doctor is checking for any heart-related ailments or the blockage in the arteries.
- Bone Sonography: As the name suggests, this is done to check for bone density and structure. This particular type of sonography is very useful when checking for osteoporosis.
- 3D sonography: This is a different form of processing the images created by the sound waves. Instead of the regular two-dimensional images, the doctor can see a 3 Dimensional interpretation of the test, thereby getting much better clarity on the location of the problem.
