If there is one thing that everyone knows about the heart, it is the heartbeats. Yes, the tiny electrical signals are extremely familiar. But what is not common knowledge is how these beats help us. The electrical signal leads the heart to contract and expand rhythmically, allowing the blood to flow through its different chambers and to other parts of the body. In short, it is these signals that guide the speed and direction of blood flow in the body to keep it active.

As you can now guess, any abnormality or irregularity in these heartbeats can lead to major issues. When you go for an Electrocardiography (or ECG), the doctor is trying to measure these electrical signals. The process is painless and non-invasive and helps the doctor assess your general heart health. If you have been asked by your doctor to get an ECG done, do not panic. It does not mean that you have a heart ailment. It simply means that your doctor is trying to ascertain the health of your heart.
Typically, ECG is a part of any kind of medical check-up, be it your routine medical check-up or a specific check-up that your doctor wants to get done. The procedure helps the doctor to gauge the following
- The speed and rhythm of your heartbeats
- The size of your heart and the position of its chambers
- Any impact of external medication or support devices like a pacemaker
- Any issues or damages to your heart that may have been caused by internal or external factors
During the ECG process, you will be asked to lie down calmly. The doctor or the attendant will attach small patches to your chest and other points. These patches are known as electrodes and are used to capture the electrical signals. The attendant may need to clip or shave some hair to attach the electrode properly.
These electrodes are connected to the actual machine via wires that help in converting the electrical signals into images for the doctor to read and interpret. The images in the form of wavy lines representing the electrical signal are printed on paper for reading.
Although the ECG process is absolutely simple and painless, there are a few things you must keep in mind before going in.
- Inform your doctor about any medications that you are taking on an ongoing basis. Also, inform if you have taken any Over the Counter medicine
- Do not exercise before your scheduled ECG
- Do not drink cold water before your ECG
- If you are feeling cold during the process, let the attendant know, as the shivering may interfere with the ECG results

- You are about to have surgery in the near future
- You are having a problem with breathing or a rapid change in the rhythm of your heartbeats
- You have a family history of heart ailments, and the doctor wants to check the same during the routine check-up
- You have a history of heart ailment yourself, and the doctor wants to monitor your current health status
