Do You Need Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges work by placing a false tooth in the open space and anchoring it with crowns on the natural teeth or dental implants on both sides. Here are some of the benefits of dental bridges:

  • Dental bridges can improve your quality of life by restoring your smile.
  • a dental bridge can compensate for the loss of the original teeth, particularly if the bridge is closely matched in color to the surrounding teeth.
  • Dental bridges do not need to be removed regularly for cleaning and can be cleaned just like natural teeth by brushing.

If you damage one or more of your teeth you should visit our office right away for dental bridge treatment.

frequently Asked Questions

A bridge is a fixed dental restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth. When two or more dental crowns are joined together it is known as a dental bridge.

A dental bridge may be placed on implants or teeth. X-rays are taken by the dentist and accurate impressions are made to ensure a well-fitted and comfortable bridge for the patient. Stability and a good fit are very important in a dental bridge for longevity.

The different types of dental bridges are:-

  • Traditional bridges: When a single tooth is missing crowns are given on teeth or implants on either side of the missing tooth and a pontic (artificial tooth) is given in between the two crowns. This three-unit prosthesis is the most common type of dental bridge and is mostly prepared using ceramic or porcelain fused to metal.
  • Cantilever bridges: When there is an adjacent tooth on only one side of the missing tooth these types of bridges are given. However, they put too much force when given in the back teeth and tend to get damaged and are therefore not recommended anymore.
  • Maryland bridge: A Maryland bridge replaces a single missing tooth without the preparation or cutting of the neighbouring tooth. It consists of a metal framework with a porcelain tooth that is connected in front of the metal framework. The framework consists of one or two metal wings on the side. These metal wings have a porous surface and a bonding agent is applied to these wings to bond it with the backside of the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth.

The advantages of a dental bridge are:

  • A dental bridge is lightweight and helps in chewing food.
  • A dental bridge helps in the redistribution of normal biting force, which is otherwise compromised if one or more teeth are missing.
  • Improves speech.
  • Gives a good aesthetic appearance to the face.
  • It provides lip and cheek fullness, thus improving the overall shape of the face.
  • Prevents shifting and tilting of adjoining and opposing teeth to a missing tooth.
  • Very comfortable for the patient.
  • Dental bridgework can be completed by a dentist in a short span of 2 to 3 appointments.
  • The longevity of a dental bridge is good if oral hygiene is maintained well and regular check-ups are done by the dentist.

There are two main steps involved in the placement of a dental bridge.

  • The first step is the preparation of the abutment teeth (teeth on either side of the missing tooth or teeth) for the crowns so that the bridge can sit in place. Some of the enamel (outer layer of the tooth) is removed to make a place for the crowns to sit later on. An impression of the prepared abutment teeth is taken using dental material like putty or alginate which gives an exact indentation of the prepared abutment teeth. Dental plaster is then poured on this impression to obtain the model of the teeth prepared for a dental bridge. This model is used by the dental laboratory to prepare the dental bridge. The dentist places a temporary bridge on the prepared teeth until a permanent bridge is prepared by the dental lab.
  • The second step involves the removal of the temporary bridge and the permanent bridge is checked for its fit and its bite with the opposing teeth. If the bite is too high the dentist will adjust the bite using dental burs and handpiece. Most dentists prefer to take a trial of the permanent bridge first and only once the fit and bite is perfect, they tell the dental laboratory to glaze (polish) the permanent bridge. This permanent bridge is then fitted on the teeth using permanent dental cement. Some dentists prefer to fit it using a temporary cement and only once the patient is comfortable with the fit and bite of the bridge the dentist cements it using a permanent cement.

The dental bridge cost in Pune depends on several factors such as your locality, the expertise of the dentist, the type of material used, the total number of missing teeth, and if there is any additional treatment like a filling or root canal treatment required in the abutment teeth.

Generally, the cost is anywhere between 3000 INR per unit to 15,000 INR per unit. The cost varies depending on the type of crown selected and also differs in the case of different dentists.

Dental bridges usually last for 5 to 15 years or more depending on the oral hygiene maintenance of the patient.

It is easier to take care of a dental bridge than a denture. Proper brushing and rinsing of mouth after every meal is essential to maintain the dental bridge. The abutment teeth especially have to be maintained well as they support the dental bridge. Your dentist will show you a proper brushing technique and also recommend a special floss that can be used to clean the difficult to access areas of the teeth.
