When you visit a hospital or a pathology for a blood test, the staff will collect a small amount of your blood in a test tube or a container specially designed for the purpose. The blood is generally collected from the inner part of the elbow or near the wrist, as the veins in these regions are closer to the skin surface. For small children, the sample is generally collected from the back of the arm. If required, their skin will be numbed with a spray prior to blood sample collection.
The staff will then clean the area with an antiseptic and tie a tight band to slow down the blood flow. This helps in the swelling of the veins and making it easier for the staff to draw the blood sample. After this, they will prick the vein with a needle attached to the syringe to draw the blood into it.
Once the required amount of blood is drawn out, the needle will be taken out and apply mild pressure on the skin. This will then be covered with a cotton pad. That’s it.
The needle prick may at most give you a scratching sensation. However, it should not be painful. In case you have a fear of needles or blood, or you felt nauseous the last time you went for a blood test, let the staff know in advance. They will make you comfortable before proceeding with the blood test. Also, if you have taken any medication, let them know as it may interfere with your blood test results.
